# How to Buy Appliances on a Budget

We rely on our [appliances](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances.html) every day to cook, store and preserve our foods, and to get our dishes and clothes clean, among other important tasks. More often than not, we take them for granted – a lesson many of us only learn after our most relied upon appliances break down.

When it comes time to finally upgrade that old unreliable [refrigerator](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances/refrigerators.html) or leaky [dishwasher](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances/dishwashers.html), it’s important to be aware of all of the options available to you in order to get the best bang for your buck. Purchasing new appliances for your home can be a substantial investment; however, it doesn’t have to be with these tips for buying appliances on a budget.

 **Do your research**

Most appliance retailers have [websites](http://www.goemans.com) where you can find boatloads of information about different home appliance manufacturers, models, and pricing. Be on the lookout for appliance [buying guides](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/tips-videos) that’ll provide you with the information you need to know before you venture to the showroom to make your purchase. It’s also a good idea to visit the [showroom](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/showrooms) directly so you can see the appliance(s) up close and personal – sometimes online images don’t do an appliance justice and vice versa.

**Prioritize features and extras**

What kinds of features are important to you when it comes to appliances? Do you want it to be quiet in its operation? “Smart” in its functionality? Do you want it to be fashionable? Do you want it to be energy efficient? Do you need a [warming drawer](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances/cooking/warming-drawers.html) or [double oven](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances/cooking.html?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=!acq!v2!--3506540728&utm_campaign=Goemans_Category_Kitchen_BBM&configuration=435)? The bottom line is that special features and extras cost money. Believe it or not, the cost of an appliance can vary greatly depending on the finish and/or colour. Standard [white appliances](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/appliances.html?color=49) tend to be on the cheaper end, while custom colours and panel-matching designs will cost you extra. If you’re on a tight budget, prioritize functionality over aesthetics.

While having a set of brand-matched appliances in your home would be great, don’t be afraid to mix and match manufacturers and brands (***not*** *finishes and/or colours!*) to save some cash.

**Ask yourself what you need the appliance to do**

Do you have a large family that requires you to do constant laundry and store tons of food? Or are you part of a single or two-person household that could get by using a smaller appliance? Consider the needs of your household and what exactly you need the appliance to do for you before you buy. Chances are you don’t need that extra-large capacity washer and dryer pair if you live alone. Resist the urge to buy an appliance that won’t meet your needs simply because it’s “on sale.”

**Consider buying floor models or clearance items**

Purchasing a floor model is a great way to save money when buying appliances. Retailers often offer discounts on floor models that may have minor imperfections and have been handled by customers, but are otherwise like new. Some retailers even sell returned items for a discount.

Shop clearance centres for the best deals on these kinds of appliances. For example, [Goemans Appliances’ Clearance Centre](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/clearancecentre) offers substantial savings on scratch and dents, end-of-line and floor models, factory uncrates, customer cancellations, in addition to discontinued appliances.

**Consider buying local**

Local independent appliance retailers, such as Goemans, offer that personalized touch big box stores simply can’t compete with. Independent appliance retailers’ after-sales service also tends to be a lot better as well, so should something go wrong, you can rest assured you’ll be taken care of.

To learn more about how to save money when buying appliances, and to find a reliable appliance that fits your lifestyle, we invite you to visit one of your **local [Goemans showrooms](http://www.goemans.com/gmen/showrooms)** today. You’ll be able to see, touch, and feel the different models and brands available, and make an informed choice as to which would work best for your unique needs.
