How to Buy Appliances on a Budget

We rely on our appliances every day to cook, store and preserve our foods, and to get our dishes and clothes clean, among other important tasks. More often than not, we take them for granted – a lesson many of us only learn after our most relied upon appliances break down.   

 When it comes time to finally upgrade that old unreliable refrigerator or leaky dishwasher, it’s important to be aware of all of the options available to you in order to get the best bang for your buck. Purchasing new appliances for your home can be a substantial investment; however, it doesn’t have to be with these tips for buying appliances on a budget.

 Do your research

Most appliance retailers have websites where you can find boatloads of information about different home appliance manufacturers, models, and pricing. Standard white appliances tend to be on the cheaper end, while custom colours and panel-matching designs will cost you extra. If you’re on a tight budget, prioritize functionality over aesthetics.

 While having a set of brand-matched appliances in your home would be great, don’t be afraid to mix and match manufacturers and brands (not finishes and/or colours!) to save some cash.

Ask yourself what you need the appliance to do

Do you have a large family that requires you to do constant laundry and store tons of food? Or are you part of a single or two-person household that could get by using a smaller appliance? Chances are you don’t need that extra-large capacity washer and dryer pair if you live alone. Resist the urge to buy an appliance that won’t meet your needs simply because it’s “on sale.”
