Radon Awareness Month

Here at Goemans we love our customers and when we can bring you information that helps you and your family - we get right on board.  That's why we are sharing this important information with you about Radon Awareness Month. November is Radon Awareness Month, and you may be asking yourself what exactly is radon? Radon gas is a colourless, odourless, gas that can be found in elevated levels in certain homes, which has become the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Radon can enter the home through cracks and openings in floors especially in basements and lower floors.
For most of the year, the air pressure inside your home is lower than the pressure in the soil surrounding your foundation. This difference in pressure can draw air and other gases in the soil, including radon, into the house. Gas containing radon can enter your home at any opening where the house contacts the soil. These openings can be present even in well-built and new houses. Potential entry routes for radon in homes with poured concrete foundations include cracks, areas with exposed soil or rocks, openings for utility fixtures or hollow objects such as support posts.

Unfortunately, a high concentration of Radon gas in the home is known to be the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers; and is 10x more dangerous for children.
For this reason, it’s important that all Canadians test their homes for radon and take action to reduce their radon level, if required.

Health Canada suggests measuring radon for a minimum of three months’ time, preferably during the heating season. This makes November the perfect time to order a Radon test kit and start measuring the level in your home.

Goemans Appliances has partnered with Canada Radon to bring this important message to you and your family and are encouraging all Canadians to test their homes for Radon.

The good news: radon gas in the home can be reliably controlled so that it never reaches hazardous levels. In order to do this, it's important to test your home for Radon using a test kit below.
