OTR vs. Hood

Ventilation may not be the most exciting topic when you're thinking of renovating your kitchen, but it's an important one to discuss. When replacing a hood fan what options do you have? There are many different kinds of venting systems available, how do you determine which is the best for you?

The Over the Range (OTR) microwave is a great option for people who need counter space or just want an all-in-one option, with the convenience of a microwave and the help of a hood fan this is a popular option. Modern OTR units will offer all the features of a microwave - some will even include the options of air-fry. The OTR does have similar power to a lot of hood fans that are available, but that may not make this option right for you.

Wall Mount or Under Cabinet Hood

Anyone who is more than a casual cook will probably be looking for something a little more powerful to keep the air clean while cooking yummy master pieces. This will require a Wall Mount or Under Cabinet Hood. These options can provide more capture area and higher cfm (cubic feet per minute) range. Wall mount hoods come in many styles and have options for “under cabinet” or “chimney”. You can get something traditional, professional, or more contemporary. You can even make a big statement with a beautiful custom hood in copper, stainless, or in any colour you can think. Or if you prefer to hide the hood in the cabinet or a canopy then look for a “built-in” or “insert” and allow your cabinetry to be the star of the kitchen.

If you have an island cooking surface the OTR is not an option. You will require an island chimney hood, a ceiling mounted vent or a downdraft. Some cooktops have a built-in downdraft but more common is the retractable downdraft, a unit that with the push of a button comes up out of the counter when you need it and goes down again to leave you a clean minimal look when you are done.
