Home Maintenance Tips For Spring

After enduring months of freezing weather and the complications that come with it, it’s finally time for our reward! The time of the year that we all have been waiting for, Spring season! Who doesn’t enjoy the smell of blooming flowers, the sight of trees getting their leaves back, and the perfect weather for an outdoor picnic? But before we can skip to the good part, there are some not so glamorous tasks for us to do in order to make the most of Spring. One of these includes preparing our homes for the season. We have compiled here a checklist for you that will cover the most important things to prepare your home for Spring and the following Summer.

Let’s get to work!

Examine The Window Seals

The Winter can cause cracks or harden the caulk around the windows and doors of your house. Make sure to re-caulk them if they feel loose. Also, try opening and closing all the windows to ensure that there’s no obstruction during opening and that they close properly. If there are cracks or gaps it can cause heat/cold air to escape and thus negatively affect your utility bills.

Touch Up The Exteriors

Examine the exteriors of your house for any signs of damage, refill or cover any cracks or movement in the concrete, re-paint any spots or areas necessary, and replace the siding if it’s rotting. Also, make sure that none of the outside faucets and pipes are damaged or clogged. If you are easily able to stop the flow by placing your thumb on the faucet, there’s likely clogging or a leak and you should get them fixed right away.

Get Your Chimney Inspected

It’s better to get your chimney inspected and cleared by a licensed expert. Also, inspect it for any signs of external damage and get the flue cleaned.

Check The Gutters And Roof

You may have done this as part of your Winter home maintenance but it’s good to give it another round of inspection. Make sure that the gutters are clean, unclogged, and that they don’t have any cracks or leaks. Also, check your roof to make sure that there aren’t any loose shingles or cracks. If you do find something that needs to be repaired or replaced, get that taken care of before it expands into a bigger issue.

Service The Air Conditioning Unit

Make sure that all the connections for the air conditioning unit or the HVAC system are working, the filters are cleaned or replaced, and if possible, get the air conditioning unit serviced by a professional before you start using it for the season.

Inspect The Deck And Patio

Before you bring out your barbecue and patio furniture, make sure that your deck and/or patio do not have any rot, cracks, or split boards. If you see any damage, get it fixed or replaced before you start using the area. If there’s still snow, wait for it to melt before you sweep off the debris.

Check The Fire Alarms And Lights

The change of season is a good time to check on your fire alarms and replace the batteries if needed. Also make sure that you check all the exterior lights and other safety measures like the fire extinguisher is not leaking, etc.

Other Small Things

Make sure that all the gas and electric powered maintenance equipment and tools are working well, get the fireplace cleaned and the firewood put away safely, clean out the vents including the dryer vent, etc.

We hope you have a safe and fun Spring this year!
