Gas ranges seem to be all the rage with professional chefs and avid home cooks. You'll hear them discussed at length at home renovation conferences and see them being used on all your favourite cooking competitions and may wonder, what's all the hype? Well unlike many 'innovative' products these days, Gas Ranges are definitely worth it and here's why.

Cooking on a Gas Range is almost as precise as you can get. Cooking with gas means cooking with a live flame, but one you can control. Unlike cooking over a bonfire, which actually takes a significant amount of skill and knowledge, cooking on a Gas Range gives you the heat from a flame but allows you to adjust it with controls to make your life a lot easier. Not only is it easier to control but it also heats up food and boils water incredible fast, which is a significant plus if you're often found at the stove cooking up something delicious. If your kitchen is frequently used, Gas Ranges can be incredibly helpful because they use a lot less electricity as well.

Gas Ranges come in three different types:

Rear Control Gas Range is a gas range that can be put anywhere in the kitchen. It doesn’t require counter tops on both sides for it to fit properly, as it has finished sides. The control panel is on the back and sits against the backsplash. These are typically the most affordable and easiest ranges to work with. Rear control ranges come in 24” or 30” width.

Front Control Gas Range is similar in concept to the rear control however as you can guess, the main difference is the controls are in the front. They have the same depth as rear control ranges and the sizing is the same at 24” or 30” width as well. A while back front control ranges were known as ‘slide-in’ ranges however most ‘slide-in’ ranges now have finished sides, so you don’t have to worry about having your cabinetry built around them.

Professional Gas Range is a front control Gas Range that typically has a higher BTU (British Thermal Unit) output, meaning a higher-level heat and come in a variety of sizes ranging from 24” up to 60”. Most professional ranges look more ‘commercial’ but some like the Wolf range are incredible stylish and work well in many homes. These ranges also come with additional features such as griddle, French and grill tops along with induction and can be paired with steam ovens as well.

If you’re going to go Gas, definitely do your research and check out the variety of technological advancements that Gas Ranges have now. Most Gas Ranges come with wi-fi capabilities, can include features such as an induction element and even be paired with an electric oven or even a steam oven.
